Term Definition
Legislative branch A group of people chosen to make laws.
Impeachment When a majority of the members of the House of Representatives accuse the president or other high government officials, such as a federal judge, of serious wrongdoings.
Appropriations funds for specific use
Speaker of the house The presiding officer of the House Of Representatives.
Bicameral Two house, as in a legislature with two houses.
Vice President person who votes in senate in case of a tie
Standing commitee permanent committee that specializes in a particular topic
Majority party party with most members of congress
Redistricting process of redrawing the boundaries of districts
Re-apportionment redistribution of legislative seats according to population
President Pro Tempore An officer who presides over the Senate when the Vice President is absent.
Filibuster The use of long speeches to prevent a vote on a bill in the Senate.
Constituents The people a member of Congress represents.
Census An official count of the population made every ten years to find out how many representatives each state should have and to forecast the demand on the different services government provide.
Conference committee oint committee that helps members of the senate and the house of representatives work together
Joint session when senators and representatives meet together to hear the president's state of the union address
Implied powers power not expressly named in the constitution
Minority party a party with fewer members of congress
Lobbyist People who represent interest groups.
Checks and balances system in which each branch of government is able to limit the power of the other 2 branches
Interest groups Groups of people who work together for similar interests or goals.
Cloture limits a senator to debate for no more than 1 hour, use must be voted on by the senate

Expulsion to force a member of congress to leave because of wrong doing or honesty
